Cat Types
Cats are often divided into different cat types sometimes even within the specific cat breed. Cat types are categorized according to their coat patterns and colors:
-
Bicolor cat also known as Tuxedo cat/Jellicle cat are among the most common cat types. Bicolor cats are distinctive for combination a white coat and some other color. They are found in many breeds as well as in cats without pedigree.
-
Tabby cats have a striped pattern in multiple color combinations. They are the most common domestic cat type but the tabby pattern also occurs in registered cat breeds (for example the Bengal).
-
Calico or Tortoiseshell cats sometimes called torties are almost exclusively female cats with mottled coat with least three different colors. The Calico pattern can also occur in registered cat breeds.
-
Maltese cats are considered all cats with exclusively blue coat and do not have a pedigree. Blue coat is also found in registered cat breeds: British Shorthair, Korat, Charteux and Russian Blue.
Besides classification of cats into different types according to coat colors and patterns common is also division according to the length of hair into longhaired and shorthaired domestic cats. Both hair length types are also found in internationally recognized cat breeds but the division is commonly applied to household cats which do not belong to a registered breed. Cats are sometimes also divided into different body types: oriental, foreign, semi-foreign, cobby and semi-cobby.
